In Memoriam of the Reverend Arthur C. Ross, Jr.

Dear Ones,

Our beloved colleague and friend, the Reverend Arthur C. Ross, Jr., passed from this life to more life on Thursday, June 23, 2022, at his home in Los Angeles, at the age of 73. He is survived by his son, Mr. Arthur Leroy Ross.

Art earned his B.A. in Creative Arts from San Francisco State University, and his M.A. in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. He was ordained by the African Methodist Episcopal Zion denomination on 7/19/81 at the Martin Temple AME Zion Church. He served as the Assistant to the Pastor at our Westminster Presbyterian Church (1981-1984), where he organized community-based program using his background in personal and community development counseling. And, during that time, Art worked in a management position for the Greyhound Bus Company.

The Reverend Arthur C. Ross, Jr. was received into membership of the Presbytery of the Pacific and installed as Pastor of the Bel-Vue Presbyterian Church on May 1, 1984. He served this congregation as its pastor faithfully for 38 years until his death. He was a phenomenal preacher and often shared his musical talents and gifted singing voice in worship and at special events and occasions. I can only imagine that he has now found a place in that heavenly choir.

Offering his service to the larger church was important to him. Art was a commissioner to the 209th General Assembly (1997) in Syracuse, NY.

He was very active in the life of our Synod. He served as Synod Moderator, Council Member, Nominating Committee, Search Committee for the Synod Executive, and a commissioner to the Synod Assembly on several occasions. In addition, Art served as Chair of the Black Advisory Committee (BAC) when it was part of the Synod structure. When the former BAC became the National Black Presbyterian Caucus-Southern California (NBPC-SC), he served several terms as its Chair.  Art served the Presbytery on several committees over the years such as Social and Ecumenical Concerns, Self-Development of People, Congregational Life, and Nominating. He also offered his service as temporary moderator of St. Paul’s and Church of the Redeemer during periods of transition.

A Service of the Resurrection for the Reverend Arthur C. Ross will be held on Wednesday, July 13th at 10:30 am, at the Bel-Vue Presbyterian Church, 675 E. 118th Street, Los Angeles 90059.
