Welcome to the Missions Page!!!
As the Presbytery of the Pacific, we are a diverse community of approximately 50 churches in the Los Angeles basin and Hawaii who engage in mission work together. Through the Presbytery, there are opportunities for both local, national and international hands-on mission work on an ongoing basis. We also gather annually at the end of September for a mission-focused presbytery meeting to deepen the integrity our individual, church and presbytery mission witness. Please check out our different areas of outreach, and contact our Mission Catalyst, Rev. Heidi Worthen Gamble, Rev. Heidi Worthen Gamble for more information.
Annual September Mission-Focused Presbytery Meetings – Every September, members of the Presbytery of the Pacific come together as a joint body to focus on mission and the changing context of the church in post-Christendom. Organized by a Visioning/Planning Team out of the MIP committee, our goal is to challenge congregations as a collective witness here in Los Angeles and Hawaii, to be formed and shaped by spiritual formation in mission. The event is held annually on the last Saturday of September.
Combatting Homelessness – Partnering with PATH (People Assisting the Homeless), the MIP Committee and partners help to move Veterans and the chronically homeless into permanent supportive housing. If you know of someone who is chronically homeless or a veteran and in need of housing, please contact Rev. Heidi Worthen Gamble.
Habitat for Humanity – The Pacific Presbytery is in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles to fundraise $150,000 to build one single-family home in Culver City! On-site volunteering begins winter of 2015. MIP is currently forming a Habitat Pacific Presbytery Task Force to move this effort forward! New Orleans Mission Trip – Since Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, The Presbytery of the Pacific has been committed to the rebuilding of New Orleans, in partnership with the National Black Presbyterian Caucus of Southern California, facilitated by Project Homecoming.
The History of our partnership commitment to New Orleans:The National Black Presbyterian Caucus of Southern California (NBPCSC) organized an initial Mission trip to the Southern Louisiana coast in 2007 to respond to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and a faulty levy system in New Orleans in 2005. The group served in Presbyterian Disaster Assistance pods in Houma, Louisiana and were surprised to be working that year with a volunteer group from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Pacifica, California. The two groups quickly bonded and planned for a return trip in 2009. In 2009 NBPC-SC also partnered with POP to co-sponsor the NOLA mission trip experience. Since 2009 the NOLA mission experience has been a partnership between NBPC-SC and POP. The trips have been staffed by our Presbytery Mission Catalyst, Rev. Heidi Worthen Gamble and NBPC-SC continues to provide leadership on the planning team. Our New Orleans Partnership continues to receive scholarship funding from the National Black Presbyterian Caucus, and together we are nurturing young adult leadership for a new generation of mission leaders within our churches, cities and nation. The 2016 will be our sixth return trip to New Orleans in mission recovery as this partnership lives out its commitment to assist the people of this area.
