Pacific Presbytery’s August Mission eNews!

To Leaders in the Presbytery of the Pacific:

From a mayor’s press conference to an immigration forum, from a faith-based homeless summit to a prayer vigil, it has been a busy summer.

The Holy Spirit continues to call us forth to a bold mission witness on in this time and place. What a privilege it is to serve with all of you in Pacific Presbytery.

                 Grace and Peace to you,
Rev. Heidi Worthen Gamble, Mission Catalyst, Pacific Presbytery

For Such A Time As This: Join Us in Prayer for Pastor Noe Saturday and Monday 10am-12pm downtown Los Angeles

Our Matthew 25 churches and immigration and refugee task force in the Presbytery of the Pacific invite you to participate in:
Leaders praying for Rev. Noe

Prayer Vigil for Pastor Noe

10am-12pm
Los Angeles Federal Building-USCIS
300 Los Angeles St
Los Angeles, CA 90012

Why are we praying? Pastor Noe Carias Mayorga, a Latino evangelical pastor in South Los Angeles at a thriving Assembly of God church, was detained by ICE officers last week at a routine check-in for his immigration status. He is slated for deportation but remains in the detention center downtown.

We want to bring this injustice into deep prayer and faith-rooted action. Please join faith leaders throughout the city in a prayer vigil for two days, Saturday and Sunday, August 5th and 7th, from 10am-12pm as we pray for the release of this colleague and brother in Christ. It is within the power of ICE officers to not deport him.

Please RSVP to: Rev. Heidi Worthen Gamble: heidi@pacificpresbytery.org

Days of Compassion: Preach It!
Revs. Amanda Riley, Sue Fisher, Emman Orendain, Mark Jones, Frances Rosenau and Jen-Hao Lee.

Collective faith and energy for community transformation is what Los Angeles, and our nation, needs right now. We can only be successful in addressing stubborn challenges like homelessness through active faith engagement and civic partnership. That is the spirit of Days of Compassion,”  Mayor Eric Garcetti

Last week, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti brought together faith leaders from throughout the city and county to launch his Days of Compassion campaign, and to challenge the faith community to be a moral force from the pulpit and in our congregations to preach a spirit of welcome for our brothers and sisters in neighborhoods who are moving from the streets into permanent supportive housing, with the passage of Measures H and HHH,

Habitat Build Update in Culver City

Building is expected to begin in the Fall of 2017 for ten units of Habitat housing on Globe Avenue across from Culver City Presbyterian Church. Our Presbytery has now raised over $180,000 for this build so far. That’s fantastic!!

Presbytery of the Pacific is now considered a corporate donor, which means that we will be given one Saturday per month for approximately 18 months.

As we get closer to the actual start of the build, the Habitat Presbytery Team will be contacting you, asking for a “Habitat Lead” person from each church in the Presbytery to begin coordinating a monthly build day Presbytery-wide. So stay tuned, and we will be contacting you soon!

Questions? Contact Habitat Co-Leaders Rev. Dr. Frances Rosenau: fwrosenau@culvercitypres.org and Elder Judith Wong: <judithw@ucla.edu>

The Presbytery of the Pacific is Forming a Homelessness and Housing Task Force

Since the passage of Measures H and HHH, and the unique opportunities it offers for partnership to better resource and permanently house the homeless who seek help from our churches, we are creating a homelessness and housing task force in the Presbytery.

If you are interested, please contact Rev. Heidi Worthen Gamble, heidi@pacificpresbytery.org.

Paola Schellenbaum, International Peacemaker for Refugees and Unaccompanied Minors, Waldensian Church of Italy

Paola Schellenbaum

Paola Schellenbaum is an internationally-recognized peacemaker from Italy, working with the refugee services from the Waldensian Church. She is a leader in a church-wide effort to provide safe passages for refugees and asylum seekers.

Italy registered 186,000 immigrants last year and that number is expected to rise to 200,000 this year.

Paola is going to be visiting the Los Angeles area September 22-26, 2017, thanks to our neighboring presbyteries of San Gabriel and San Fernando who are hosting her that week through Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. She still has a few time slots left if you would like to host her for a coffee or educational forum at your church. Contact heidi@pacificpresbytery.org.
