It has been over six months since the start of the LA fires, and the organizing of the Long Term Recovery Groups (LTRGs) is now in full swing. What is an LTRG? It is a cooperative body made up of representatives from faith-based, non-profit, government, and businesses, all working within a community to assist victims as they recover from a disaster. LTRGs identify who in the community is most vulnerable and leverage funders on behalf of the whole community. LTRGs are the building blocks of the long-term recovery process, and also build community strength and resilience. A great example is Maui’s LTRG, Ho’olala Mauiakama. You can read about it here:

An update on the LTRG progress for communities affected by the LA fires: Malibu is organized and has formed their LTRG; Topanga is organized and about ready to launch as part of a larger LTRG; Palisades has not yet formed their LTRG; Altadena is ready to launch their LTRG in the next few weeks. And who is organizing community leaders behind-the-scenes to form LTRGs? Emergency management organizers (FEMA, Cal OES, CA VOAD) and yours truly, your Mission Catalyst!

Now that LA is turning the corner into the long term recovery, this will be my last update on the Palisades fire exclusively; from now on I will post updates on the long term recovery happening in both Maui and LA. Maui is also in Pacific Presbytery and on the journey of long term recovery from the Maui fires in 2023, and I believe both regions will inform, instruct and inspire one another.

I must say a word regarding the horrific ICE raids that are disappearing beloved members of our community every day right now. This is a human-caused disaster, and when trauma is human-caused and intentionally harmful, it is even more traumatic. We are a deeply traumatized region and presbytery, and it is heartbreaking. From Ephesians 3, may we grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and may we be filled with the fullness of God as we protect and defend our very vulnerable communities–whether fire-ravaged or taken by ICE. God bless our City of Angels.
